Noting a conspicuous absence of the food of her childhood in Chiang Mai in Thaitown, Cheng Ng decided to setup up a little eatery in the heart of Sydney’s Thaitown to cater to the growing Thai community and to show Sydney’s locals how things are done in Thailand’s north.

Cheng Kitchen’s menu features tried and true Pan-Thailand favourites such as Pad Thai and Gang Kiaow Wan (Green Curry) as well as the more eclectic Northern Style dishes such as Khanom Jeen Nam Ngiaow (fermented rice noodles with pork blood jelly, tomato and shrimp paste stew) and Gang Hung Lay (Chiang Mai pork curry with ginger and peanuts) which you’d be hard pressed to find in Sydney.

So next time you’re in town for a show or shopping, why not step into a little piece of Chiang Mai right in the heart of Sydney, at Cheng Kitchen.

Lanna cuisine is similar to that of Shan cuisine in neighbouring Myanmar and Northern Laos and is characterised by the primacy of sticky or glutinous rice over that of jasmine rice, seen in Central and Southern Thai cuisines. Historically, Chiang Mai and the Greater North of Thailand has seen a confluence of many neighbouring peoples and cultures and as such its cuisine reflects this. Chinese, Burmese and North Eastern Thai (Isan) influence Lanna cuisine. Lanna cuisine, within this mix, also has a wide array of herbs and spices that are indigenous to northern Thailand which makes this cuisine similar to others in the area but absolutely unique.

The noodle soups were so good and so cheap! Thai sausages were amazing and exactly just like the ones I’ve had in Thailand!

They serve real authentic Thai food in authentic Northern Thailand style. Yes Thai food is not generic. Different parts of Thailand cook up different kinds of food and flavours. The differences are subtle but it is there. Half of the fun is to detect and quantify the differences. The price is also very good. The $29 taster banquet is a must, assuming that you can take heat. Non Thais who love their Thai food must make this as a rite of passage. It is time for us to move away from pad Thais, and catch up with the good stuff Thai people had been keeping for themselves. You may not end up liking Northern Thai food, but your knowledge on the wonderment of Thai food and culture will deepen and your life will be less hollow as a result. I would give 6 stars if they let me.

Definately one of the best Thai eateries in Sydney. Was so happy to finally find a Northern Thai restaurant and I was not disappointed. Food (Khao soi) was exceptional and traditional, quick service and very reasonable pricing. The highlight of the night though was our waitress, a middle aged female who was very attentive, happy to listen to our stories and took the time to recomend myself and my cousin some other dishes. Will definately be back!
